Launch of the Digital Trustees Network in the South West

On 24 March 2025, we were proud to host the first ever Digital Trustees matchmaking event in partnership with Third Sector Lab, connecting digital professionals with voluntary, community and social enterprise (VCSE) organisations across the South West.

This event is part of our wider mission to build a thriving, inclusive Tech for Good ecosystem across the region, where digital skills and strategic thinking strengthen the boards of charities and community groups tackling local challenges.

Why Digital Trustees?

Digital transformation is essential for the future of the VCSE sector. From data security and online fundraising to digital service delivery, boards increasingly need trustees with the skills and confidence to guide them in a digital age. As one attendee put it:

“It’s about making better decisions, faster—and with real insight into digital opportunities and risks.”

Our Digital Trustees initiative aims to:

  • Connect tech talent with organisations looking for digital leadership.

  • Demystify trusteeship for digital professionals.

  • Support digital inclusion and responsible tech practices in the third sector.

More than 30 attendees joined us online for a structured, engaging session that included:

  • Introductions to the Digital Trustees initiative from Ed Howarth (Tech4Good South West) and Robyn Barclay (Third Sector Lab)

  • Inspiring contributions from Emma Millington and Robyn Barclay on what it’s like to serve as a digital trustee

  • A series of short charity pitches highlighting the need for digital skills

  • Breakout room match-making, giving VCSEs and aspiring trustees a chance to connect and explore opportunities

Breakout topics included:

• What are the biggest digital challenges facing charities today?

• How do charity boards operate in practice?

• What questions do potential trustees have before getting involved?

• Where can digital skills make the biggest difference?

As one participant quoted “There are opportunities to make connections that may support change in our organisation”, and “I want to support Bristol organisations”.

What’s next?

This was the first in a series of Digital Trustees focused events planned for 2025. We’ll also host an in-person event during Bristol Technology Festival.
