Tech Skills for Good
Tech Skills for Good is about connecting people, skills and purpose.
Across the South West, many charities know what they want to achieve with technology — but lack the time, confidence or access to the right support to make it happen. Tech Skills for Good brings skilled tech professionals together with local charities to work on practical digital challenges, in a way that’s supportive, human and grounded in real needs.
Through structured, skills-based volunteering, charities get help with things like data, systems and digital communications - while volunteers use their expertise to create meaningful, lasting impact in their local community. It’s not about quick fixes.
In 2025 we launched a pilot programme in partnership with Aviva Bristol’s Technology Team, offering short-term, practical tech support to charities and voluntary organisations across the South West.
The aim was to match real organisational needs with skilled volunteers, helping nonprofits overcome digital challenges in a manageable, time-bound way.
Why it exists
Many charities face barriers to digital transformation due to limited time, resources and expertise.
By creating structured pathways for tech professionals to contribute their skills, this pilot explores how short, focused tech interventions can unlock support, strengthen local connections, and build digital resilience across the South West.
Pilot at a glance
Running from April to September 2025, the pilot provided:
5 charities supported
23 volunteers engaged
100% said they’d recommend participation
Our pilot was a collaboration between Tech4Good South West and Aviva Bristol’s Technology Team - a group of professionals experienced in software development, digital platforms, and IT systems, keen to use their volunteering hours to support local nonprofits.
“I would like to take a moment to thank the Aviva team for their time and energy to get us started down our tech journey to further efficiency. We appreciate all your efforts and your gentle approach to ensure that the learning is embedded and will be useful for the future.”
“The team at Aviva explained everything clearly and never made me feel intimidated, it really built my confidence.”
Case study: First Steps Bath
First Steps Bath is a community nursery supporting children with special educational needs. Through Tech Skills for Good, volunteers helped the team improve how they coordinate digital support and volunteers internally. This included facilitating planning meetings, capturing transcripts to support decision-making, and helping the organisation think more clearly about how digital tools could save staff time. The result was a smoother, more confident approach to organising support, allowing the team to stay focused on what matters most: the children and families they serve.
Case study: Climate Barometer
Climate Barometer tracks and analyses public and political opinion on climate change in the UK. As part of the pilot, Tech Skills for Good volunteers supported the organisation with data-related thinking and digital insight, helping strengthen how information is structured and used. The support focused on making data more accessible and useful, enabling clearer analysis and communication of findings that inform climate conversations nationally.
We are now looking for more partner businesses to facilitate digital and tech skills-based volunteering, get in touch to discuss.
