Tech for Good Unconference
Reflecting on the Tech for Good Unconference: Connecting, Innovating, and Driving Positive Change
On Friday, 6 December, we brought together over 55 passionate technologists, social innovators, and changemakers for our Tech for Good Unconference in Bristol. The day was a vibrant celebration of how technology can be a powerful force for social good, with participants diving deep into critical questions shaping our digital future.
A Day of Collaborative Exploration
The Unconference format—participant-driven and dynamic—allowed us to surface and explore key themes that matter most to our community. From digital inclusion to AI ethics, from sustainability to the future of work, our conversations were rich, nuanced, and forward-looking.
Key Themes That Emerged
1. Digital Inclusion: Bridging the Divide
Participants explored how to address digital inequality, particularly in rural areas where access to tools and broadband remains a challenge. Practical solutions were proposed, from better design to creating opportunities that tech can unlock—like employment and community access.
2. AI and Ethics: Balancing Innovation and Responsibility
AI was a hot topic, with discussions ranging from its sustainability impact to ethical concerns. Key questions included:
How can AI solutions balance profitability with inclusivity and social responsibility?
What frameworks are needed to guide ethical AI practices while avoiding overwhelm?
How can we ensure AI supports, rather than disrupts, societal good?
3. Tech and Climate Change: Avoiding Techno-Optimism
In a discussion that questioned assumptions, participants tackled the environmental cost of tech, including data centres and their energy use. Ideas centred on implementing web sustainability guidelines and starting conversations early in the design process to ensure meaningful outcomes.
4. Funding Tech for Good: Breaking Barriers
Securing funding remains a challenge for small organisations and startups in the tech for good space. Discussions highlighted the need for:
Better access to networks and mentorship for first-time applicants.
Balancing impact narratives with investor priorities.
Exploring impact investing and the potential for micro-grants.
5. Inclusive Product Design: Creating Technology That Helps, Not Harms
Participants emphasised the importance of engaging diverse voices in the design process to avoid echo chambers and biases. Examples were shared of tech specifically tailored to meet the needs of underrepresented or disadvantaged groups.
6. Future of Work and Leadership
From remote working to upskilling for a rapidly changing workplace, attendees discussed the evolving demands of leadership. Empathy, vulnerability, and self-awareness were highlighted as crucial traits for tomorrow’s leaders.
Highlights and Opportunities
The 60-Second Showcase brought additional energy, where members shared projects, ideas, and calls for collaboration. From AI-focused workshops to initiatives tackling climate change, it was clear that innovation is thriving in the Tech for Good community.
