Head wearable technology for brain health monitoring

HeadX is a business focused on creating innovative solutions to support the management of concussion and brain trauma. HeadX is developing a Smart Headband specifically designed to support players, teachers, coaches and parents in ensuring safe participation in grassroots contact sport.

CEO and Co-Founder Richard Wheatley is nominated as a Tech4Good South West Champion for demonstrating a commitment to innovation for social impact. HeadX examplifies tech for good by addressing a critical public health and safety issue in contact sports through the use of wearables and data analytics to enhance immediate safety. The project demonstrates how innovative technology can protect vulnerable individuals and promote safer participation in sport, making a tangible difference in the lives of athletes and their communities.

Do you think technology can and should be used as a force for good?

Technology has the power to drive positive change across a wide range of sectors, offering innovative solutions to some of society's most pressing challenges. From combating climate change to improving global healthcare access, technology can enhance the quality of life, increase sustainability, and promote social equity. When used responsibly and inclusively, it has the capacity to democratize access to vital resources and connect communities worldwide, creating a more sustainable and just future. In the social care sector, however, the integration of technology has been slower despite its vast potential to improve care quality and efficiency. As a Trustee for Crossroads Care Gloucestershire, I’ve witnessed the growing demand for more tailored and efficient support services for individuals with complex needs. Technologies such as remote monitoring, AI-driven care solutions, and digital platforms can empower caregivers while promoting independence and dignity for those receiving care. These innovations offer the opportunity to reduce pressure on overburdened systems, streamline care coordination, and provide more personalised support. It is crucial that we focus on ensuring these technologies are accessible and adaptable within social care, helping to address the gaps in services and better support vulnerable populations.

Describe your background and experience as an individual that led you to co-founding HeadX, a tech for good business

I have over 20 years of experience working across different industries, including aerospace, consumer technology, and startups. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to lead teams and work on a range of projects, from developing innovative products to improving processes in engineering and IT. Most recently, I co-founded HeadX, where we are working on a wearable device to help manage sports-related concussions. I’ve also worked with DEEP, focusing on advancing technology for underwater exploration. In these roles, I’ve been fortunate to collaborate with talented teams and contribute to projects that aim to make a positive impact. In addition to my work, I’m committed to supporting others through mentoring within the Institute of Engineering & Technology and serving as a Trustee for Crossroads Care Gloucestershire, where I help explore how technology can enhance social care services.

Describe the work you have done using technology for good

Throughout my career, I’ve focused on leveraging technology to solve real-world problems and create positive societal impact. As Co-founder of HeadX , I’m developing a smart wearable to help manage sports-related concussions, aiming to enhance safety in schools and grassroots sports. By providing real-time data on head impacts, this technology empowers coaches and parents to make informed decisions about player safety, addressing a critical public health concern.

At DEEP, I led the development of advanced submersible technology, designed to revolutionize underwater exploration. This technology not only expands human capabilities for scientific research but also supports marine conservation efforts, enabling us to better understand and protect our oceans. In addition to my professional roles, I actively support the integration of technology in social care.

As a Trustee for Crossroads Care Gloucestershire, I work on initiatives to explore how technology can improve care services for individuals with complex needs. From assistive devices that promote independence to digital platforms that streamline caregiver communication, these innovations have the potential to significantly enhance the quality and accessibility of care for vulnerable populations. In all these projects, the common goal is to ensure that technology is used as a force for good, addressing societal challenges and improving lives in meaningful ways.
